Blot and support the rug

Use clean towels to blot the wet area. Press without twisting, wringing, or scrubbing the hide.

Move the rug with both hands or support its weight from underneath. Wet hide can stretch when lifted from one narrow point.

Check what made it wet

Clean water, a drink, pet accident, and outdoor runoff need different responses. Follow the care label for any cleaning step beyond blotting.

For colored, oily, salty, or biological spills, professional care may be appropriate before the residue dries.

Reshape and air dry evenly

Lay the rug flat or support it evenly in a shaded area with good airflow. Gently return the hide to its natural outline while it is damp.

Keep it away from radiators, tumble dryers, fireplaces, heated floors, and direct sunlight.

Turn or reposition for airflow

If the care label permits, reposition the rug so both wool and hide receive air without folding or creasing it.

A large or heavily soaked rug can retain water for a long time. Do not assume the hide is dry because the wool tips feel dry.

Shake and brush after complete drying

When every layer is dry, shake the rug gently and brush the wool in small sections. Stop if the hide feels stiff, brittle, or misshapen.

A rug that was fully saturated or remains uneven should be assessed by a sheepskin specialist.
